Current (past 30-day) substance use reported by 9th and 11th graders (combined) on the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey: county compared to the state average.
Trend graphs from the Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) use 9th graders only. Up through 2010, the MSS surveyed 6th, 9th, and 11th graders. In 2013, the survey changed to include 5th, 8th, 9th, and 11th graders.
Use of tobacco and nicotine among youth declined steadily until the introduction of e-cigarettes or vapes in the early 2000s, reversing the trend. In 2022, most youth nicotine use was consumed through vaping (as opposed to other forms of tobacco, such as cigarettes, cigars, hookahs, or smokeless tobacco like chew or dip).
